Three days after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine ensuing bloodbath of innocent people, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) today released a Press Release pertaining to an application filed by Ukraine against the Russian Federation seeking justice.

The ICJ established in 1945 is the principle judicial organ of the United Nations (UN), located in Peace Palace, the Hague, Netherlands. The Court's role is to settle legal disputes between its member states in accordance with International laws.

Ukraine in its application filed under Article II of the Genocide Convention has alleged that Russian Federation led by Vladimir Putin has committed ‘Genocide in Ukraine’ and thereupon deliberately killing and inflicting serious injury on members of the Ukrainian nationality.

The application has invoked and highlighted the ICJs jurisdiction on Article 36, paragraph one of the Statue of the Court along with Article IX of the Genocide Convention on the basis of both parties being its signatory members.

Furthermore, Ukraine has also underscored in its application about Russia’s false allegations leveled against Ukraine pertaining to genocide in the Luhansk and Donetsk territories and consequently declaring and implementing a “Special Military Operation” against Ukraine with the express purpose of preventing and punishing purported acts of Genocide without any basis.

The application filed by Ukraine against Russia states, "Russia on the false pretext is now engaged in a military invasion of Ukraine involving grave and widespread violations of the human rights of the Ukrainian people."

On 24 February, President Putin made an announcement of his decision to carry out a “Special Military Operation” and that the purpose of this operation stated by him is to protect people who, for eight years now, have been facing humiliation and genocide perpetrated by the Kiev regime.”

Putin : As I said in my previous address, you cannot look without compassion at what is happening there. It became impossible to tolerate it. We had to stop that atrocity, that genocide of the millions of people who live there and who pinned their hopes on Russia, on all of us. It is their aspirations, the feelings and pain of these people that were the main motivating force behind our decision to recognise the independence of the Donbass people’s republics.”

The application dated 26 February, instituting proceedings of alleged Genocide against Russia can be read here.
